Camp NaNo Update / Writer's Night Update!

I should be keeping track of what I've read at Writer's Nights, and what I've worked on this month (which is Camp NaNoWriMo).

First of all, in January I read... well, I don't remember.  Let's work backwards on this one.  Last week was April Writer's Night (at Gene and Mike's place), and I read the story Substitute, which I completed earlier this month.  I rewrote the ending thanks to some good suggestions, mostly from Matt.  (I also wrote a brand new story suggested by Matt -- more on that later.)

March Writer's Night was at Sheryl and Shan's place, and I read Abjure the Realm of No Return, which I also wrote earlier in March.  I was really happy with it, but there were some suggestions that I incorporated into the story, mostly from Sheryl's friend whose name escapes me at the moment.  Good stuff though that improved the story!

February I read... I'm pretty sure I read Villain of the Weak.  I remember because Gene suggested a tweak for the ending which improved it quote a bit.  I still can't remember what I read in January... maybe it was Tryout Trouble because I know I've read that one.

No, I'm pretty sure it was Revealing, because that gave me the idea to write Permit.

Well, anyway... in March I wrote:  Permit, Abjure the Realm of No Return, Superdrone, and Dream A Little Dream.  I was writing right up to the start of Camp Nano and so it's hard to remember exactly, but all of those show last modified dates from March.

For Camp NaNoWriMo so far I have written:  The Shadow Out of Joe's Mouth, Substitute, Elementary, Consuming Passion, Whom the Mad Would Destroy, Godzilla Was An Artist, Old (idea suggested by Matt), and Avatar Bazaar.  I've also worked on a very long story called Oz on the Half-Shell, and I've started several story ideas/fragments:  All the Drama You've Been Craving, Sharp Dressed Man (which was a half-written story that already existed under a different name -- still half-finished), Gorgon Gun, Happy When It Rains, Walpurgisnacht, and Heart of a Child.  I've been doing most of my writing this week on Walpurgisnacht, but I'm not getting a whole lot of writing done atm.  :/

Writing Goals Update March 2015

I've been playing a lot of MMO online games.  As a consequence, I haven't managed to write very much since July.  But!  I did finally finish two stories this month -- so far.

For January Writer's Night I read Villain of the Weak, which got a good reception (Gene provided a much better, almost perfect ending line.)  February Writer's Night I read my story Revealing, which needs a couple of tweaks but got a good reception.  One thing about that story is that you learn about a former villain of Grandpa's named Judge Doomhollow, and I realized that I really needed to place him in another story.  So within the next couple of weeks I worked on, and finally managed to finish, a story called Permit.

Right after this I had an idea for a story inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft tale From Beyond.  I wrote my story that night, and titled it Abjure the Realm of No Return, which is a title I both love and hate.  In any case, these two stories are what I've accomplished for 2015.  I read Abjure at the March Writer's Night and it went over very well, only John had any comments which were small tweaks designed to improve the story (they did).  In fact, I didn't really provide a description for Grandpa, and there's no sidekick in the story, and nobody complained about either of these things, so I think the story worked quite well (I've since added a descriptive line for Grandpa, of course).

So my goal:  Write two stories a month for the year:

January:

May 5:  Permit
May 7:  Abjure the Realm of No Return

I am signed up for April's Camp NaNoWriMo and my goal will be to write a story a day, so we'll see if I can really manage that.  I accomplished this as a goal last April but failed in July when I tried it again.  But I have a lot of ideas I've come up with in the past half-year:

It's All Relative - An idea from last July that I still like.  Crackpots all over the world claim to disprove Einstein's Theory of Relativity -- it's kind of like Crackpot Science 101, that's just where they all start for some reason -- but in a world with superhero physics, what if a person's strong belief in their own crazy theory might actually alter reality?

Brain Salad / Banner of Worms - From February 2015.  This is one of those "ideas" that I can't remember what the central idea really was.  Apparently it's a story about a lone zombie being hunted by hordes of zombie apocalypse survivalists -- which now that I think about it, that's kind of a funny idea.

Dress Your Best - From last Fall, but worked on in January 2015.  This is a story that I've written a lot in the past few months, without really coming up with a good ending/plot.  I like the idea because I like the setting and the sidekick involved, and even the villain.  But it needs somewhere to go.

The Candyman Can / Chocolate Castle - Aug 2014.  A story in search of a better title, this is also more than half written and in need good ending.  A villain steals all the chocolate in town and constructs a castle out of it, which is slowly melting.

Dream A Little Dream - This one is kind of a riff on the Call of Cthulhu.  Surprisingly, I've written quite a bit of it (just a few weeks ago -- this is a March 2015 idea) and then almost forgot about it completely.

The Dreamquest of Unknown Anarchy - March 2015.  So many ideas for this, so little direction.  I've actually written down quite a bit for this one.  My general idea is to do three short stories that serve as scenes out of a much larger work that you never get to see.  I've done that before.  There's a lot of material in the Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath to riff on, but I don't have any specific jokes or concise ideas yet.

I've listed this as my project title for Camp NaNoWriMo in April, although at best it's 3 or 4 short stories that are tied together.

Deadly Rainbow - July 2014.  Apparently I thought this was a funny title for a Grandpa Anarchy story.  I have no story attached to this file, just the title.

The Dutchman's Trousers - March 2015.  Grandpa fights a possessed pair of trousers.

Elementary - I've never done a Grandpa Anarchy explains the murder scene.  That's the basis for this story, which is more than half written.  From October 2014.

Godwined - A sort of story idea built around Godwin's Law of Time Travel, or possibly a proposed Godwin's Law of Superheroism, or maybe even tangentially related to Reductio ad Hitlerum.  I haven't really gotten beyond that basic idea.  July 2014.

The Great Brain Robbery - It's a brain switch story.  I don't think I've done one of those yet.  Only a few lines to this one so far, but I have the complete idea so it's ready for me to write.  Sept 2014.

Hooked On A Feeling - From August 2014, this is, yes, a space opera story inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy.  I don't know if I have an actual plot though.

Mercury In Retrograde - I'm not sure if I had a clear-cut idea for this one either, other than to riff on silly astrology.

Mission - An idea based on a "what if Grandpa got tips for missions like you do in an MMO game?"  I'm not sure if this really deserves to be a finished story or not.

Nefarious Things - Just a title really, no story attached.

Patron of the Arts - I think this is the Nina Ballerina origin story.

Rare Books - It occurs to me that the Necronomicon is like the Gideon's Bible of rare occult books.   It's everywhere.  March 2015.

Robe and Wizard Hat - No story idea attached, but I really need a story with this title.

Serial Anarchy - This was going to be a novel that I wrote in November.  I didn't get far.

Shadow Out Of Joe's Mouth - A story about a strange shadow creature.  This is actually a story about a villain from the Grandpa Anarchy comic books suddenly appearing in the real world.  March 2015.

The Space Between Worlds - This was actually an early version of Abjure the Realm of No Return, which I wrote a few weeks ago.  I think I saved the idea as two different names.

Substitute - An idea from July that I still want to do, about Grandpa Anarchy working as a substitute teacher at a school for gifted superpowered kids.

Superdrone - a villain who fights by proxy -- drone proxy.  An idea I came up with today, that I should be writing now instead of this.

The Curse - A story idea inspired by a song, Drink With the Living Dead.  Grandpa's been in that kind of situation before, I think -- except Grandpa doesn't drink.

The Machine - A play on the phrase Dues Ex Machina, where a god literally comes out of a machine.

The Thing in the Sewer - Monster in the sewer story.  Kind of a lame idea, although I have an ending.

Time On My Hands - I'd forgotten about this one, from Nov 2014.  A story about the Literate Lemur trying to kill Grandpa Anarchy -- which is definitely not his style.  I've written a lot on this one.

Whom the Mad Would Destroy - A Death Medal story.  Mostly a few lines of dialog, but I like them so much that I need to craft a story around them.

Why Do Ghosts Have Clothes - Seriously.  Why?

Writing Goals For 2015

I want to get more writing done than I've managed in the last six months (I've written very little), but I'm going to try and scale back my goals a bit so that I can actually meet them, maybe.

1.  Write two Grandpa Anarchy Stories Each Month.

I'm going to scale back my goals for Grandpa Anarchy stories, since I haven't been getting much writing done in the last half year.  Two stories a month seems achievable.

2.  Finish Three Tai-Pan Stories.

I still have stories I want to work on.  One of my  goals is to finish Bitch, because it really should be published before Hair of the Throug That Bit Me, which is already scheduled for publication.

3.  Finish the third "magical girl" arc for Girl's School, and try to wrap things up.

It's hard to believe I still have fans waiting for me to finish this thing.

4.  Write 1 short story set in my Otherworld Blues universe.

It was a nice goal which I totally failed to accomplish anything on.  Last year I said I'd write 4 stories, now I'm hoping I can manage at least 1.

5.  Publish Book One of my Grandpa Anarchy stories, edit 2nd book, assemble stories for 3rd book.

I did nothing on this last year, but it's still one of my goals.

List of stories I intend to work on:

Grandpa Anarchy Stories

World of Hero:  3 of 4 parts finished, but it's a mess.  Needs a rewrite.
Second Class (working title):  I did a lot of work on this in eary January, nothing since.
Unpossible:  No progress.
Serial Anarchy:  This is the Grandpa Anarchy novel I started in November.
Gate Into Danger:  A SG1-themed story that I meant to write this year.
Conspiracy Claus:  My Christmas ghost story for the end of 2015, already have the idea for it.

Fan Fiction

Girl's School, Third Magical Girl Arc (Kahotep Adventure).
I Can See Clearly Now.
A Goddess In Oz.

Other Original Fiction

Otherworld Blues Stories, Jubel In Oz.

Tai-Pan Stories

Bitch, Chance Encounter, Blanking the Lady (variations), Zesh and the Bitted Throug.

Writer's Goals for 2014, End of Year Update

I accomplished one thing in December -- I wrote a Christmas ghost story.  The working title is Gin and Ginger.  I read this at our December writer's night/Christmas party, and people seemed to like it (I got a "needs to be tightened up" sort of response), but I wasn't satisfied with it.  I came up with a new opening and a plan to rework the story and tighten up the plot, and I started the rework but then I got sidetracked like usual.

It's December and I've Done Nothing

I'd love to tell you about everything I've written since July, but frankly, I've written next to nothing.  I was in the middle of my second "Camp NaNoWriMo" back in July when I got wrapped up in MMO gaming, and I've had a hard time getting anything written since.  I like gaming -- but I also like getting a little writing done.  It's hard to find a balance.

I was hoping that NaNoWriMo would solve this problem for me, but the pull of gaming was too strong.  I had a hard time getting back into the rhythm of writing, and ultimately failed.  My plan was to write a Grandpa Anarchy novel -- called Serial Anarchy.  I wrote the first chapter and half of the second.  I'm still adding bits of dialog to it, so I haven't abandoned it and still want to finish it, but in the meantime I got diverted into other pursuits.

The first thing that diverted me was a strong desire to work on a Tai-Pan story during the second week of November.  I wrote several scenes on a Vashti story that I've had in my head for years, but I got bogged down on that one too.  After that, I simply didn't try very hard to write anything the rest of the month.

I did a bit of writing yesterday on Serial Anarchy, and I still want to work on that Vashti story, and I have a strong desire to get back to working on my sprawling, ongoing anime fan fiction novel Girl's School, but I realized today that what I really need to work on this week is a Christmas ghost story.  Christmas ghost stories are a tradition for our writer's group, thanks to Gene's interest in  them (they were quite popular back in the 1900's, A Christmas Carol is just one famous example but there were many of them written back in the day.)  I've written two Grandpa Anarchy Christmas ghost stories the last two years, and I want to have one written for our writer's night Christmas party this year as well.

I came up with an idea between last night and this morning, and I've already written quite a bit of it down and saved it under the title "The Conspiracy Claus".  But I also knew that I had a file saved as "Christmas ghost story 2014" and when I pulled it up, it's actually partially written already.  Not only that, but the idea is a very good one -- I want to finish it now.  So I guess "The Conspiracy Claus" will have to go on the back burner until next year, and I'll try and finish what I'm currently calling "Gin and Ginger".

So, yeah.  My big goal right now is to finish that one story, in the next week or so.  We'll see how that goes.

Grandpa Anarchy Story Ideas July - Sept.

A list of Grandpa Anarchy story ideas that I've come up with in the last few months.  Some are partially written, and respresent pretty much all the writing I've done recently:

All Relative - This is a story about someone who thinks he's disproven the theory of relativity.  This is a big thing for crackpot science, everyone thinks they've disproven relativity, usually without even fully understanding what relativity is.  But in a superhero world, what if a villain really CAN disprove relativity?  That could destroy the universe as we know it!

Boy Gravity - aka Dress Your Best, Sharp Dressed Man, needs a better title.  A battle over fashion with a fashion-conscious sidekick.

Choco Castle - Needs a better title.  This is a story idea built around a villain who steals all the chocolate in the city and builds a castle out of it.  He wasn't hard to track down....

Deadly Rainbow - This is nothing but a title and I forget why I created it.  I guess I liked the title.

Elementary - This story begins with Grandpa gathering people into the great room of a mansion in order to explain how the recent murder took place.  Only Grandpa's not known for his dectective work....

Godwined - What is Godwin's law of supervillains?  The more they resemble Nazi's, the easier they are to defeat?  The more crime you fight, the more often you will have to defeat Hitler?

Great Brain Robbery - A brain switch story idea, since I haven't done one of those yet.

Hooked On A Feeling - An intergalactic tale of mass destruction and 70's pop music, maybe.

Mercury In Retrograde - Bad things happen when Mercury is in retrograde.  Apparently.

Mission - This is a takeoff of the idea of Grandpa Anarchy receiving a random tip in the manner that such things happen in City of Heroes.  It all seems ridiculous to the sidekick, and I think the plan was for it to be a trap to lure in Grandpa.  I don't remember exactly where I was going with it, but I have the first dozen lines of dialog written.

Patron of the Arts - The title of a Nina Ballerina origin story.

Robe And Wizard Hat - This isn't really an idea per se, I just think it would be funny to write a story with this title.

Substitute - Grandpa Anarchy, substitute teacher at Dr. Z's school for gifted superheroic students.

Taming of the Lemur - The idea here would be to try and write an entire Grandpa Anarchy story in a Shakespearean style.  I may never actually tackle this idea, but it's there.

The Curse - A story about a ghost/zombie who's cursed to do something (drink, gamble) with a new person every night until someone beats him.  Enter Grandpa Anarchy!

Thing in the Sewer - Some sort of tentacled alien monster story.

Why Do Ghosts Have Clothes - Well, why do they?

YOLO - Grandpa Anarchy is a very good counter argument.

2014 Writing Goals, Update for End of September

I've written nothing since mid July.  At the time I was in the middle of Camp NaNoWriMo, and my friends chided me for complaining when I failed to write anything for a week, but I know well that a week can turn into three months in the blink of an eye, and it did.  I've written virtually nothing for three months.

I also haven't done a monthly update in that long, so here we go:

I did finish two more stories after my last update -- Crowdsourced and Bookstore Avenger.  At the moment I don't even remember them that well.  I've dinked around with a few other ideas, but haven't finished anything.

I do plan to participate in NaNoWriMo in November, and I'm hoping to get some things done in October leading up to that.

Yearly Goal Progress:

1.  Write a Grandpa Anarchy Story a week.

For April I participated in Camp NaNoWriMo, in which my goals were 35,000 words and to write a new Grandpa Anarchy story every day.  I managed 27 out of 30 stories and finished the other three soon after.  I managed a few more stories in May, then set out to completely rewrite World of Hero, which had been one of my long-time goals.  I managed to greatly expand it and completely rework the plot (or to add a plot is more accurate), and I completed 3 of 4 parts, but it's still a mess and I got bogged down in trying to complete it.  I switched to Return to Amethyst 3 and after some fits and starts, I finally finished that in early July.

I've pretty much already completed this goal.  Here's my new totals for the year, based on my one story a week (4 per month) goal:

January:

Feb 07:  Revealing
March 29:  About A Hell Boy
March 30:  If Books Could Kill
March 31:  Out Of Cheese Error

February:

April 1:  Villain of the Weak
April 2:  Banana Also Rises
April 3:  The Eagle Has Landed
April 4:  Bombs Away

March:

April 5:  Landoff
April 6:  Disorientation
April 7:  Landmark Decision
April 8:  Trick of the Trade

April:

April 9:  Blah Blah Blah
April 10:  Reboot
April 11:  Four Weddings and Nine Hundred Funerals
April 12:  Beneath the Skin

May:

April 13:  The Hand You're Dealt
April 14:  Grandpa Anarchy the Musical Act One
April 16:  Grandpa Anarchy the Musical Act Three
April 17:  The Bane of the Black Spork

June:

April 18:  Temple of the Dog
April 19:  Startup
April 20:  Grandpa Anarchy and the Fiendishly Foul Fetid Frog
April 21:  Grandpa Empathy at the Gates of Hell

July:

April 22:  Iron Maiden Surprise
April 23:  Crack Squad of Misfits
April 26:  The Pompatus of Love
April 27:  Stronger

August:

April 28:  Diary of an Anarchist
April 30:  The Archimedes Death Ray
April 30:  Nobody Cries for Superman
May 3:  There Is No Try

September:

May 5:  Distracted By The Sexy
May 6:  Family Tree
May 8:  Where's My Supersuit?
May 9:  Grandpa Anarchy the Musical Act 2

October:

May 10:  Past Life Sister
May 20:  Call Me Maybe
May 23:  World of Hero 1:  Save the Girl
May 25:  World of Hero 2:  Going Off Script

November:

May 27:  World of Hero 3:  Rude Awakening
July 5:  Return to Amethyst 3:  Spirits of Stone
July 7:  Performance Review
July 11:  Hip Bone

December:

July 14:  Maps of Vampires That No Longer Exist
July 20:  Bookstore Avenger
July 22:  Crowdsourced

So by mid July I was 1 story away from finishing my goal... and I haven't finished it three months later.  :p

2.  Write a Tai-Pan story every 2 months (6 in the year).

I didn't work on this for July Camp NaNo, and I haven't worked on anything since.  I probably won't make this goal but we'll see what I come up with for NaNoWriMo in November.

3.  Finish the third "magical girl" arc for Girl's School, and try to wrap things up.

No progress.

4.  Write 4 short stories set in my Otherworld Blues universe.

No progress.

5.  Draw a picture each month.

No progress.

5.  Publish Book One of my Grandpa Anarchy stories, edit 2nd book, assemble stories for 3rd book.

No progress, aside from having the cover illo done.  Which I don't have a good copy of yet.

List of stories I intend to work on:

Grandpa Anarchy Stories

Stronger:  This one is finished!
The Eagle Has Landed:  This one is also finished!

Return to Amethyst Part 3 Spirits of Stone:  Finished!
World of Hero:  3 of 4 parts finished, but it's a mess.
Second Class (working title):  I did a lot of work on this in eary January, nothing since.
